Chilean low budget airline JetSmart has hired Pérez Alati, Grondona, Benites & Arntsen in Buenos Aires and Del Río Izquierdo Abogados in Santiago to obtain authorisation for flights between Argentina and Chile.
JetSmart got the green light from the Argentine National Civil Aviation Administration (ANAC) on 5 July. ANAC relied on in-house counsel. JetSmart’s operations will start later this year.
The airline’s entry to Argentina comes after business-friendly President Mauricio Macri scrapped ticket price ceilings to attract more international carriers. From 15 August, the government will also allow airlines to drop prices as low as they want for domestic flights.
Following the changes, low budget airlines Norwegian and Argentine Flybondi jumped at the opportunity to operate in the country.
JetSmart’s exact routes are not decided, but the company intends to operate from the military El Palomar airport, which recently opened for commercial use. It is located in Buenos Aires province and aims to connect various destinations in Chile with cities across Argentina, ranging from Salta in the north to El Calafate in the south.
